At Green Scene Energy PLC, we are scaling beyond traditional solar deployment to drive localized industrial innovation. By developing and manufacturing technologies that utilize electricity for productive, income-generating, and life-enhancing activities, we bridge the gap between clean energy access and sustainable economic growth across East Africa.
Our localized manufacturing division is a direct response to Ethiopia’s National Clean Cooking Roadmap and ongoing national electricity tariff reforms — offering ultra-efficient appliances that protect households and businesses from rising energy costs while eliminating biomass dependency.
Featured Innovation: The TOLO (ቶሎ) Hybrid AC/DC Induction Cookstove
One Stove. Total Energy Flexibility.
The TOLO (ቶሎ) induction stove is Ethiopia’s first locally manufactured, high-efficiency double-burner cooktop. Engineered explicitly to handle regional grid variations and match local culinary traditions, TOLO delivers rapid, 100% emission-free cooking.
What sets TOLO apart is its hybrid power architecture, allowing it to seamlessly serve both urban grid consumers and off-grid rural communities.
Key Technological Advantages
- Dual-Power AC/DC Architecture: TOLO functions natively on standard Alternating Current (AC grid power) for urban homes and switches to Direct Current (DC solar power) to run directly off solar home systems or mini-grids without requiring expensive, inefficient power inverters.
- Heavy-Duty Internal Engineering: Built to last, the internal assembly features industrial-grade copper heating coils and customized surge-protection circuitry designed to withstand local voltage fluctuations.
- Tailored for Local Culinary Practices: Programmed with precise digital touch controls and multi-burner configurations to optimize heat distribution for traditional Ethiopian cooking, drastically slashing household cooking times.
- Maximum Safety & Health: Operates entirely smoke-free, mitigating indoor air pollution and eliminating fire hazards associated with charcoal, wood, or kerosene.

🌶️ Solar Agro-Processing for Spices
From 21 days to under 24 hours. Ethiopia’s spice farmers traditionally rely on firewood boiling and three weeks of open-air sun drying — a process that invites contamination, degrades quality, and drives deforestation. A single traditional processing unit consumes up to 21 trees per year and emits around 12 metric tonnes of CO₂. Green Scene Energy is applying its solar-hybrid energy systems to change that.
Our pilot solar agro-processing line — combining mechanical washing, solar-steam boiling, precision slicing, and controlled heat-pump drying — completes the entire cycle in less than 24 hours, at a pilot capacity of 300 kg per day. The result: cleaner, safer, higher-value spices processed entirely without firewood, preserving the natural qualities that make Ethiopian turmeric and pepper prized worldwide. Because turmeric processing is traditionally carried out by women, our farmer and cooperative training prioritizes women processors and technicians.
This work is supported by TRANSFORM — the joint impact initiative of Unilever, the UK Government (FCDO), and EY — which selected Green Scene through its East Africa Challenge to decarbonise Ethiopia’s turmeric processing industry.
This is productive use of energy at its fullest: clean power turning harvests into export-grade products, and farmers into participants in a higher-value chain. Development partners and agricultural programs interested in solar agro-processing are welcome to start a conversation.
