Renewable Energy Solutions Project Ethiopia – Part 1: Advancing Clean, Reliable Energy for Rural Communities
In August 2024, we at Green Scene Energy proudly completed a transformative electrification project in Oborso East, one of five Ethiopian villages we’ve connected to reliable power in the past year. This groundbreaking project was made possible through our collaboration with Balance of Storage Systems (BOS), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and co-funding by the European Union and Energising Development (EnDev).
Before our intervention, Oborso East depended on noisy, polluting diesel generators and dangerous kerosene lamps for energy. These outdated sources filled the village with constant noise, toxic fumes, and fire hazards. Today, thanks to our efforts, the community has access to clean, uninterrupted energy through a 200 kWp solar photovoltaic system paired with 400 kWh of lithium battery storage. While the system operates independently off-grid, it is future-ready to integrate with diesel generators or the utility grid if needed.
Reaching this milestone wasn’t without its challenges. Key components were pre-assembled and rigorously tested in Germany before shipment. Once on-site, we had to adapt to the hilly terrain, leveling the land to properly install the solar panels. Logistical hurdles and navigating Ethiopia’s regulatory landscape also required careful planning and execution.
The results speak volumes. Over 900 households now have access to safe, sustainable energy. Beyond powering homes, our system supports commercial shops, cafés, and other businesses, enabling refrigeration, ventilation, and improved working conditions that enhance daily life. By replacing diesel generators and kerosene lamps with solar power, we’re also cutting local emissions by an estimated 166 metric tonnes of CO₂ annually.
This project is a testament to what teamwork, innovation, and a shared vision for sustainability can achieve. We are thrilled to see the positive impact on the Oborso East community and remain committed to expanding access to clean, reliable energy across Ethiopia. Together, we’re building brighter futures!
